ACT – Bijoy Menon

Bijoy Menon is a neurologist and a Professor in the Departments of Neurosciences, Radiology and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and the Calgary Stroke Program. He is the PI of the AcT RCT that has recruited 1600 subjectsAnnette Fromm is a vascular Neurologist at the Stroke Unit at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen, Norway. She holds a PhD in Young ischemic stroke from the University of Bergen, with special focus on Neurosonology, and completed the ESO-endorsed Master program in Stroke Medicine at the Danube University Krems, Austria. Annette is closely involved in acute stroke treatment, observation and investigation, and serves as PI for several national and international acute stroke studies. She also is the secretary of the Norwegian Stroke Organisation across Canada to test if Tenecteplase is non-inferior to alteplase in patients who are eligible for thrombolysis in routine care. He leads an internationally recognized research program that is pushing the boundaries of modern stroke care by using advanced image processing techniques, statistical and clinical trial methodologies and Artificial Intelligence based algorithms to develop cutting edge imaging tools and better treatment for people suffering from acute stroke.

PARANASPP – Maren Ranhoff Hov & Else Charlotte Sandset

Maren Ranhoff Hov, MD, PhD, is an associate professor at Oslo Metropolitan University, the Head of the Prehospital Acute Brain Programme funded by the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation and a senior scientist at the Department of Neurology, Oslo University Hospital, in addition to completing her neurology training in the same department. Her background as trained emergency medical technician, with a PhD in prehospital stroke care including mobile stroke units, gives her a unique insight in prehospital stroke care, and is why she is the mastermind behind the Paramedic – Norwegian Acute Stroke Prehospital Project (ParaNASPP)

Else Charlotte Sandset, MD, PhD, is the Secretary General of the European Stroke Organisation with broad research experience from acute stroke care working on large clinical trials both in and prehospital, as well as an international career with research fellowships in both Sydney, Australia and Nottingham, UK. She is also the Chair of the Oslo Stroke Research Group Ullevål, and a consultant stroke neurologist and a senior scientist at the Stroke Unit, Department of Neurology, Oslo University Hospital. Her unique knowledge on large scale trials and international research in the field of acute stroke is the reason the ParaNASPP has succeeded in combining both the prehospital and the inhospital chain of stroke survival.

TASTE-A – Andrew Bivard & Mark Parsons

Doctor Andrew Bivard
Andrew Bivard is an Australian neuroscientist. He received a PhD in 2013 from the University of Newcastle and is currently based at the Royal Melbourne Hospitals Melbourne Brain Centre, University of Melbourne. Andrew is currently Chief Technology Officer of the Australian Stroke Alliance, an organisation with a focus of improving health equity in regional Australia though the use of novel tele health and treatment paradigms.

Professor Mark Parsons
B.Med (University of Newcastle), PhD (University of Melbourne), FRACP (Neurology), FAHMS (Fellow of the Academy of Australian Health and Medicial Scientists).
Professor Parsons is an internationally recognised Neurologist and leader in Stroke Medicine, and an experienced clinical triallist, having led several international phase II and III clinical trials. He also has a strong track record of research translation into clinical practice change. He has recently been appointed as the new Executive Director of the NHMRC-accredited Advanced Health Research Translation Centre, SPHERE (Sydney Partnership for Health, E ducation, Research, and Enterprise). He moved to Sydney in 2020 as SHARP Professor of Medicine and Neurology at UNSW South Western Sydney Clinical School, Liverpool Hospital and The Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. There, he has established and leads a new Stroke and Neuroscience research team – the Sydney Brain Centre @ The Ingham Institute. He remains as a Professor of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne. He is also a Conjoint Professor of Neurology at University of Newcastle. He also is a Visiting Professor at Fudan University, Shanghai.

Sven Poli was introduced to the field of stroke by Werner Hacke in 2006 at Heidelberg University, Germany. Since 2013, SP is Vice Medical Director of the Department of Neurology & Stroke at Tübingen University, Germany. SP has been local PI of more than 60 stroke trials including over 35 international interventional trials. SP designed IITs on hypothermia, hyperoxygenation, AF detection, secondary prevention in cryptogenic stroke, thrombolysis in central retinal artery occlusion, point-of-care coagulation testing in NOAC patients, and hemostasis in intracranial hemorrhage. Additionally, he is leading a laboratory for translational stroke research at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research, where he explores new therapeutic approaches in preclinical stroke models. Besides ATTICUS, SP has been (co-)coordinating investigator of six other national or international multi-center trials (APICES (NCT04057690, www.apices-trial.de), ATTICUS (NCT02427126), INCH (NCT00928915), POST-MTECH (www.hyberniamedical.com/about-us), PROOF (NCT03500939, www.proof-trial.eu), REVISION (NCT04965038, www.revision-trial.de), TRUST-CT (NCT03634748). He has published more than 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals incl. 94 original research articles.

SETPOINT 2 – Julian Bösel

Dr Julian Bösel is currently the Chairman of the Dept. of Neurology at the Kassel General  Hospital, which is a large neurovascular and neurointensive care center in central Germany, academically attached to the University of Southampton, UK, and the University Hospital Marburg, Germany. He is Professor of Neurology and lectures at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, were he fulfilled most of his academic career and part of his clinical career. Dr Bösel is an expert in the fields of stroke neurology, telemedicine, acute and endovascular stroke treatment, neurocritical care with a focus on large ischemic infarction / airway and ventilation / sedation / status epilepticus / neuromonitoring, and emergency neurology. He has conducted many single-center and multi-center stroke and neurocritical care studies and trials (e.g. SIESTA, SAGA, SETPOINT2), published 150 peer-reviewed papers, many book chapters, the bedside companion “Neuro-Intensivmedizin” with SOPs on all relevant neurocritical care secenarios, and is section editor of several journals. Dr Bösel is the current President of the DGNI (German Society of Neuro-Critical and -Emergency Care), Fellow and Endovascular Task Force member of the ESO (European Stroke Organizaton), and Fellow, long-standing member and former server on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the NCS (Neurocritical Care Society).

STROKE GENETICS – Stéphanie Debette & Martin Dichgans

Stéphanie Debette, MD PhD, is Professor of Epidemiology/Public Health at the university of Bordeaux and practicing Neurologist at Bordeaux University Hospital. She serves as Director of the Inserm Bordeaux Population Health research center. Prof. Debette has been leading large collaborative genomic and epidemiological studies on stroke, cognitive traits, and imaging markers of brain aging, especially cerebral small vessel disease, aiming to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying brain aging and to improve prevention and treatment of stroke and dementia. Prof. Debette leads a European Research Council grant and is principal investigator of national investment for the future and European grants. She has been awarded the Claude Pompidou Foundation prize for dementia research and the scientific excellence award of the European Stroke Organization. A former Fulbright and Bettencourt-Schueller fellow and adjunct associate professor at Boston University, she was a visiting professor at Kyoto University. She collaborates closely with the CHARGE consortium where she serves in the research steering committee  and chaired the International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC) between 2017 and 2019.

Martin Dichgans is a Professor of Neurology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, LMU (Munich, Germany). He is the Founding Director of the Institute for Stroke and Dementia Research and President of the European Stroke Organization (ESO). His major research interest is in the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), stroke and vascular dementia with a focus on genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and the conduct of investigator-initiated studies.
Dr. Dichgans authored over 550 research articles, reviews, and editorials. He served as a coordinator / principal investigator of various national (e.g. DZNE), EU (FP7 & Horizon2020) and transatlantic (Fondation Leducq) research grants, and is in leadership positions at national and international conferences on stroke and dementia. Dr. Dichgans coordinates multicenter clinical trials on SVD and atherosclerosis and has contributed to national and international stroke guidelines and expert statements. He is / has been on the Editorial Board of the journals Annals of Neurology, Stroke, European Stroke Journal, International Journal of Stroke, and Frontiers in Stroke. Dr. Dichgans chaired the scientific advisory board of the EU ERANET Neuron. He further serves on the research committee of the World Stroke Association (WSO) and the board of directors of the DFG-funded Excellence Cluster Munich Cluster of Systems Neurology.

EPIGENETIC AGE – Natalia Szejko & Guido Falcone

Natalia Szejko is a Neurologist who completed her residency in Department of Neurology, Medical University of Warsaw, Poland. She received her MD and PhD from the Medical University of Warsaw (Poland). In 2020 she completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at FalconeLab, Yale University, USA, when she started her collaboration with Prof. Falcone and his Lab. Her clinical and research background includes mainly vascular and movement disorders. She has been awarded a number of international grants and awards such as Fellowship of the Kosciuszko Foundation and Scientific Award for the Best Young Scientist granted by the journal Polityka (Poland). She has completed her clinical and scientific background with various international fellowships in Germany, Austria, Spain and the US. Her recent research aims to find genetic and epigenetic determinants of aging and neurovascular phenotypes.

Dr. Falcone is an Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Research in Neurocritical Care in the Department of Neurology at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Falcone is a Neurologist with subspecialty training in Neurocritical Care and Stroke, and an Epidemiologist with expertise in Population Genetics and Big Data. Working within the construct of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium, Dr. Falcone’s Lab conducts research at the interphase of clinical neurology, neuroimaging, population genetics and genomic medicine. The goal of the Falcone Lab (www.FalconeLab.org) is to understand how common and rare genetic variation influences the occurrence, severity, functional outcome and recurrence of stroke and to develop genomic medicine tools aimed at improving the care of stroke patients.

TICH NOAC – Philippe A. Lyrer

Philippe A. Lyrer (*1957) is member and former head of the stroke centre of the University Hospital Basel, neurologist at the University Hospital Basel, and is appointed associate professor of neurology. As former president of the Swiss Stroke Society (2000-2016) and as former chair of the ESO Stroke Unit Committee he was strongly involved in developing the Swiss stroke unit and stroke centre network and its certification process. At the present time he is a member of the ESO trial alliance (ESOTA). He serves as president of the Swiss Federation of Clinical Neuro-Societies. He is involved in many stroke research projects, such as for acute stroke treatment, registries for studying thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy, as well as treatment of acute intracerebral haemorrhage. He is the Sponsor-investigator of the Swiss TICH-NOAC study, a randomized controlled trial, which investigates the effects of tranexamic acid in patients with intracerebral haemorrhage while taking non-Vit-K oral anticoagulants.

IL6 CAROTID ATHEROSCLEROSIS – Joseph Kamtchum Tatuene 

Dr. Joseph Kamtchum Tatuene is a Neurologist with expertise in Neuroepidemiology, Neurovascular Ultrasound, and Translational Stroke Research. He completed his medical training at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaounde I in Cameroon and his Neurology residency and stroke fellowship at the University of Geneva Faculty of Medicine in Switzerland. He obtained complementary research training at the University of Liverpool and the University of Alberta where he obtained a PhD in Neuroscience. His thesis focused on biomarkers of high-risk carotid atherosclerosis. He is Fellow of the European Board of Neurology and has published almost 60 research articles and reviews on epidemiology, pathobiology, and biomarkers of carotid atherosclerosis and cerebrovascular diseases. He is the founder of the Carotid Atherosclerosis and Stroke Collaboration (CASCO), an international research consortium aiming to pool clinical, imaging, and laboratory data of patients with asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis from multiple cohorts across the globe to improve stroke risk stratification through score design and identification of novel biomarkers. He is on the Editorial Board of the journal Stroke and reviews for Stroke, Neurology & the European Journal of Neurology. In 2020, he was awarded the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Motyl Fellowship in Cardiovascular Sciences. He has also received awards and funding from the American Academy of Neurology, the Wellcome Trust, Alberta Innovates, the Killam Trust, and the Bank of Montreal Financial Group.
